What's the scope of medical care for which I can use health insurance?

You can use health insurance to pay for treatments, for examinations, for drugs* and other medical supplies, and for surgery and other medical treatment.

However, health insurance will not cover the cost of orthodontic work, dental materials not specifically covered by insurance, treatment not recognized as standard medical treatment methods in Japan, cosmetic surgery, ordinary childbirth and maternal checkups before and after childbirth, and other health examinations. (See Q6, Q13, and Q14 concerning costs of ordinary childbirth and health examination.)
