My wife will leave her job at the end of March, and she'll receive unemployment benefits under employment insurance thereafter. Can I still name her as a dependent?

Yes, if your wife's annual income is less than 1.3 million yen (1.8 million yen if disabled or aged 60 or older). In addition, she is eligible to retain her dependent status during the three-month restricted period before receiving benefits, even if her annual income is more than 1.3 million yen. Submit the Notification of Health Insurance Dependent (Change) with the necessary documents attached. (The eligibility criteria were revised effective April 1, 2005.)
